One of the fundamental criticisms of New Age music is that it puts people to sleep. Here, Steven Halpern, one of the founding fathers of New Age, makes that his mission and, as you might expect, does an effective job of it. Drawing on catalog material from the early 1980s, Halpern builds an attractive collection of delicate, lighter-than-air sonic textures that nicely serves the intended purpose--to fill the silence with something prettier than white noise. Halpern does so by blending electric and acoustic piano, plus additional keyboards, to create soothing, improvisational, cloudlike musical abstractions that often convey the tranquil randomness of wind chimes in a soft breeze. The liner notes also promise your subconscious will be exposed to a series of subliminal, sleep-encouraging affirmations along the quiet, unstructured way. This may sound like so much frou-frou to the unconverted, but for anyone sincerely interested in a sleep aid, Halpern's disc is a certified snoozer, a New Age music box. Other New Age discs may accomplish the same purpose as Sleep Soundly, but few will do it as persuasively. --Terry Wood

Rating : - Miracle CD for a fussy toddler
I decided to get this CD to help my son adjust to his toddler bed. He is very fussy when it's time to sleep because he doesn't want his day to end. We're transitioning him to fall asleep in his bed now and this CD really helps him get relaxed. I almost fall asleep myself each nap time and at night! I know this would make a wonderful CD to help people with insomnia (I was there as a teenager), pregnant women who can't sleep well, help you sleep when you're sick, etc. The music is very relaxing. I also highly recommend Inner Peace, Effortless Relaxation, Music for Yoga. I used Inner Peace and Music for Yoga for Hypnobirthing and through my preterm labor contractions (32 weeks on to 39 weeks when my son was born) and it was really easy to relax. They would also be great CDs to read a book to. Warning on this CD though-don't listen to it in the car! It's just that powerful!

Edit several months later: We originally purchased this CD about a year ago. We are STILL using it a year later. My toddler went through a phase that his room was scary to him and this CD helped him relax and FINALLY fall asleep in his own room. When I made this original review my son was still sleeping in his swing and we would move him to his crib and later his toddler bed. After a bit of this we transitioned him to a CD player in his room and disassembled his swing (after a while he was falling asleep in a motionless swing). We spent about a week laying next to him on the floor while he was in his toddler bed and I couldn't help but fall asleep while listening to the CD. He would fall asleep every time by the 5th song at the latest. By listening to the whole CD he'd fall in to a deep enough sleep to help him sleep all night. He rarely wakes during the night and when he does we just turn his CD back on and hug him and he's back out quickly. I recommend this CD to ALL of my friends.
